InDesign PDF to print

InDesign is a good tool for print materials when the document size, pages, bleed and export settings are correct.

Steps in brief

  1. Set the finished size of the document.
  2. Add a bleed setting to the document.
  3. Check Linked Images and Fonts.
  4. Export the PDF for printing and include the bleed.
  5. Open the PDF and check the pages individually.

Make the document the final size

Set the page size according to the finished product. Add a margin to the document if the background or image goes all the way to the edge.

Export PDF for printing

Use PDF export for printing. Bring a cutting edge and make sure the images and fonts are included in the file.

Check the pages in order

In multi-page products, check the number of pages, order and blank pages. Please open the final PDF before submitting.

Frequently asked questions

Does the PDF have to be sent as open?

For most jobs, individual pages are a safer starting point.

What if you forgot to bleed?

Backgrounds that go all the way to the edge can have a white border. Fix bleed before production.

Can there be font problems in the PDF?

Yes, if fonts are not included or converted correctly in PDF export.
