RGB vs CMYK
RGB vs CMYK – Why are printed products always made in CMYK?
One of the most common questions related to print-ready files is about color:
Why does a bright image on screen look different when printed? The answer lies in the RGB and CMYK color models.
RGB and CMYK – what’s the practical difference?
RGB – bright colors on screen
RGB (Red, Green, Blue) is a color model used for screens: computers, phones, and digital content.
RGB colors are created with light, which is why the tones can be very bright and even neon-like.
CMYK – the standard for print
CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) is the color system used in printing. In practice, all brochures, flyers, and business cards are produced in CMYK.
Printing uses ink, not light – which is why the result looks more natural and slightly more muted.
RGB files are also OK for aDigi, so there’s no need to worry.
Example: RGB vs CMYK in print
Below you can clearly see how bright RGB colors change when converted to CMYK for printing. This is completely normal and caused by the limitations of print technology.

Why don’t RGB colors always reproduce accurately in print?
On screens, colors are made of light and can be extremely vivid. In print, colors are formed differently, so the full RGB color gamut cannot be reproduced.
- Neon colors are not possible in standard four-color printing
- Screen brightness always makes colors appear more vibrant
- The print paper surface (smooth or matte) also affects the final result
Is RGB always wrong?
Not necessarily. RGB files can be converted to CMYK during printing. However, if you have precise brand colors, we recommend using CMYK settings from the start. RGB files are perfectly fine for aDigi as well – we let the machines do the best possible conversion.
Which color profile does aDigi recommend?
We recommend the widely used standard FOGRA39 for CMYK conversion, whether the final paper is smooth or matte.
