Print-Ready Magazine PDF Guide
Magazine & Booklet Print File Guidelines
When designing a magazine, booklet, or newsletter, the most important things are the correct page count and a properly exported PDF. With these guidelines, you can ensure smooth production and professional saddle-stitch binding at aDigi.
1. Page Count – Why Must It Be Divisible by Four?
This is because magazines are printed on large sheets that are folded and stitched in the center. Each printed sheet always creates 4 pages.
- If the page count is not divisible by four, loose pages would remain inside the booklet.
- Loose sheets cannot be stitched properly and would fall out immediately.
- The final magazine would not be durable or professionally bound.
2. Page Layout – Always Supply the PDF as Single Pages
When creating your layout file, make sure the document contains the same number of pages as the final printed magazine. During design you may work with spreads, but the final print PDF must always be delivered as single pages.
3. The Print House Handles Imposition for You
You do not need to arrange pages onto printing sheets yourself or worry about technical page order. When you provide a correctly exported PDF with single pages, we handle:
- imposition (sheet layout)
- folding order
- saddle stitching and finishing
4. PDF Export – Check This Setting
When exporting your magazine to PDF (InDesign, Affinity, etc.), make sure you select:
| Setting | Choose | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| Export PDF → Pages | Select Pages (not Spreads) | Ensures the PDF is technically correct for binding and production |
If your layout document has been built correctly page by page, this export option ensures the PDF is ready for print.
Summary – Key Points for a Print-Ready Magazine
- Page count must always be divisible by four (e.g. 16, 20, 24…)
- Submit the PDF as single pages, not spreads
- Do not worry about imposition — the print house handles it
- Always choose Pages in PDF export settings
