Bleed
Bleed is an extra image or background outside of the final size. It gives room for the cut and prevents white edges.
Steps in brief
- Make the document the final size.
- Add 2–3 mm of cutting allowance to the edges where the background goes all the way to the edge.
- Continue the image or color surface over the cutting allowance.
- Keep the text, logo and QR code within the safety margin.
- Please check the final PDF before ordering.
Continue the background over the edge
If the background, image or color goes all the way to the edge of the finished product, it must also continue to the side of the cutting allowance. Background that ends at the edge is the most common mistake.
Keep important content inside
The text, logo, QR code and face should be kept clearly inside the finished size. The cut must not go too close to important information.
Check the PDF before sending
Open the finished PDF and see that the elements that go to the edge continue over the edge. If you are unsure, ask for the material to be checked before printing.
The background continues past the trim line. Important content stays inside the safe area.
The background stops at the trim line. Even a small cutting shift can leave a white edge.
Bleed is the extra area that gives cutting room. The final product is trimmed down from this area.
