PDF Instructions for Adobe Illustrator

You can create a print-ready PDF from Illustrator by setting 3 mm bleed and exporting the file with Press Quality, Crop Marks and the correct bleed settings.

Bleed: 3 mmPDF Preset: Press QualityCrop Marks + Offset 2–3 mm

1) Set Bleed to 3 mm

When creating a new document

New Document > Bleed > 3 mm on all sides

Set 3 mm bleed so backgrounds and images extend beyond the trim line.

Afterwards in an existing document

File > Document Setup > Bleed > 3 mm on all sides

Useful if you notice the need for bleed later in the process.

Tip: If your design has a background color or image reaching the edge, it must extend into the bleed area. Otherwise a white border may appear after trimming.

2) Export a Print-Ready PDF

Once bleed is set correctly, export your file as a print-ready PDF:

  • File > Save As > choose file type Adobe PDF
  • Select PDF Preset:Press Quality
  • Go to the Marks and Bleeds tab
  • Enable Crop Marks and set Offset to 2–3 mm
  • Under Bleeds, choose Use Document Bleed Settings
Important: Crop marks and “Use Document Bleed Settings” ensure the printer sees both trim and bleed correctly.

3) How do I know my bleed is correct?

Bleed is correct when all images and background areas extend clearly beyond the crop marks. This prevents unwanted white edges due to small trimming variations.

Do I always need bleed?

Bleed is needed when your design has backgrounds, images or elements going all the way to the edge. If everything stays safely inside the margins, bleed may not be necessary.

What if my file has no bleed yet?

Add bleed in the document settings and extend backgrounds/images into the bleed area. Then export the PDF again using Press Quality + Crop Marks + Use Document Bleed Settings.
