An association member magazine – often VAT-free
The sale of the print run of a non-profit association's member magazine can be VAT-free (Finnish VAT Act, section 56). In practice this means no VAT is added to the printing invoice when the conditions are met.
Conditions
- Published at least 4 times a year
- The publisher is a non-profit community (as defined by the Tax Administration)
- Mainly for members or members of member communities
- Not a business activity – the magazine is not published as a trade

Is an association member magazine VAT-free?
It can be. The sale of the print run of a non-profit association's member magazine is VAT-free (VAT Act section 56) when the magazine is published at least four times a year, mainly for members, and not as a business activity. Mention the exemption when ordering. This is not tax advice – check your situation with the Tax Administration.
Why must the page count be divisible by four?
In a saddle-stitched booklet, a sheet is folded and stapled in the middle, so one sheet produces four pages. That's why the total page count must be divisible by four. We add blank pages if needed.
Should I deliver the artwork as single pages or spreads?
Deliver the artwork as single pages, not spreads – preferably as one PDF with all pages in the correct reading order. For example, a 16-page booklet is a 16-page PDF.
